3D printer speed, explained honestly

Two years ago 100 mm/s was fast; now boxes shout three to six times that. Across the 7 machines we track the ceiling is 600 mm/s — here is what that number does and doesn't buy you.

The number

What max mm/s actually measures

The box figure is the toolhead's top travel speed under ideal conditions — not the speed your average print runs at. Real print time also depends on acceleration, cooling limits, and how much of the model is fine detail that forces slowdowns.

What it hides

The spec sheet doesn't show acceleration

Two printers rated at the same mm/s can finish the same benchy an hour apart: the one with higher acceleration and input shaping reaches top speed more often. Neither number appears consistently in listings, so we score only what is published — and flag the gap honestly here.

When it pays

Who actually benefits from fast machines

Rapid prototypers iterating daily, batch producers running farms, and anyone printing large single-piece models feel speed the most. For occasional small prints, reliability features like auto-leveling repay you more often than raw pace.
