The rule
Buy for the biggest room you'll use it in
Coverage ratings assume standard ceilings and a target number of air changes per hour. A unit rated for 300 sq ft in a 500 sq ft room isn't running at 60% — it's failing to cycle the air often enough to matter. Match the rating to the room, or size up.
- Bedrooms (~150–250 sq ft): compact units suffice — and run quieter at lower speeds.
- Living rooms / open plan (400+ sq ft): buy the coverage rating, not the compact price point.
- Oversizing is safe: a big unit in a small room just runs slower and quieter.
