Projectors · brightness explained

Projector lumens, explained honestly

“8,000 lumens” on a budget projector box is not the same unit as “300 ANSI lumens” on a good one. Across the 10 models we track, here's how to read brightness without getting played.

The unit

ANSI lumens are the only honest number

ANSI lumens average measured brightness across nine points of the screen — a standardized, repeatable method. “LED lumens” or unlabeled “lumens” are marketing multipliers that can run several times higher than the ANSI figure. Our table shows the measurement type next to every number so you never compare apples to marketing.

The thresholds

How many lumens for your room

As a field guide: ~200–300 ANSI lumens works in a dark room at modest sizes; 500+ ANSI starts to survive ambient light; anything outdoors before full dark wants the top of the table. Bigger picture = dimmer per square foot, so screen size and brightness rise together.

  • Laser vs LED: laser units hold brightness and color longer over the years.
  • Resolution note: native 1080p at real lumens beats “4K supported” at fake ones — always.
