Smart bird feeders · placement & setup guide

Smart feeder placement, done right

A smart feeder lives or dies by three setup choices: where you mount it, whether 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reaches that spot, and how squirrels react to it. Across the 6 feeders we track, these three rise to the top.

Location first

Mount for the camera, not the window

The camera watches the perch, so the perch needs the light. Face the feeding port away from direct afternoon sun to avoid backlit silhouettes, and give the approach path 5–6 feet of clear flight space so the motion sensor triggers before the bird lands — that lead time is what gets you the full landing clip instead of a tail feather.

Distance to your router matters more than distance to your window: every feeder we track is 2.4 GHz only, and 2.4 GHz through an exterior wall realistically covers one to two rooms past that wall. Test the spot with your phone on the 2.4 GHz band before you drill anything.

  • Pole mount: best camera angles and easiest squirrel control with a baffle below.
  • Hang mount: works if the hook is rigid — swing blur ruins 2K footage.
  • Window mount: great views, but only where the glass is near the router.

Squirrel reality

Squirrel-proofing is a mounting decision

No camera feature stops a squirrel; physics does. A pole baffle 4 feet off the ground beats any app alert. If squirrels are your main problem, weight the build material: the metal-bodied feeder in our set survives chewing that ends plastic feeders — it's in the table below.

Power math

Solar panels need sky view, not just sun

Every feeder we track ships with solar, but the panel only helps if it sees open sky. A feeder deep under tree cover runs on battery alone — in that case, favor the biggest battery in the table over any other spec.
