Generators · quiet guide
The quietest generators, measured in dB
Campgrounds enforce quiet hours and neighbors enforce the rest. Noise is 25% of our scoring for a reason — of the 12 inverter generators we track, these lead on decibels.

Decibels are logarithmic — small numbers, big difference
A 10 dB gap sounds roughly twice as loud to the human ear. In our table the spread between the quietest and loudest units is therefore not a footnote — it's the difference between a campsite hum and a complaint.
The fine print
Rated dB is measured at quarter load, 23 feet
Manufacturers quote noise at 25% load from 7 meters away; full load is louder. The number is still the best apples-to-apples comparison available — just don't expect conversation-level quiet at full tilt.
Eco/throttle modes: noise drops with load — running only what you need keeps things quiet.
Placement matters: exhaust facing away and soft ground under the unit shave perceived noise.
Safety
CO shutoff is non-negotiable
Carbon monoxide shutoff is 15% of our scoring. It's the feature you hope never activates — and the reason we won't give top marks to a unit without it. Never run any generator indoors or near windows, shutoff or not.

Sorted by rated noise (dB), quietest first. Missing specs show as — and are
excluded from that model's score with the remaining weights rescaled.
