The best robot vacuums for pet hair, ranked by specs

Pet hair is the hardest everyday mess a robot vacuum faces: it mats into carpet pile, wraps around brush rolls, and fills a small dustbin in one pass. Of the 12 models we track, these are the ones whose specs say they can keep up.

Why suction decides it

Pet hair is a suction problem first

Loose fur on hard floors is easy for any robot. The real test is hair worked into carpet pile and upholstery edges — that takes lift, and lift is what the pascal (Pa) rating measures. In our tracked set the spread is huge: from 5,000 Pa to 25,000 Pa.

As a rule of thumb from our data: under ~4,000 Pa is hard-floor territory, 4,000–8,000 Pa handles low-pile carpet and moderate shedding, and 8,000+ Pa is where embedded pet hair in medium-pile carpet starts to come out reliably.

  • Shedding season changes the math — a bin that lasts a week in July can fill daily in spring.
  • Suction also drives edges and corners, where fur drifts and collects.
  • Brush-roll design still matters — see each model's product page for owner-reported hair wrap.

The dock question

With pets, a self-emptying dock is not a luxury

Pet hair compacts poorly and fills a robot's onboard dustbin two to three times faster than ordinary dust. A self-emptying dock turns daily bin trips into a monthly bag swap — in our set, the models flagged “Yes” in the self-empty column are the ones to shortlist.

Be honest about limits

What a spec sheet can't tell you

Two pet-critical behaviors don't appear in any spec table: obstacle avoidance for pet accidents, and how much hair wraps around the brush roll. Both are camera/software and brush-design questions, not suction questions — so we don't score them. The owner-review counts on each product page are the best public signal we have.
